Hurricane Earl Passes North Carolina, Heads Toward New England 03 Sep 2010 Hurricane Earl passed off the Outer Banks of North Carolina and headed toward New England and Nova Scotia packing winds of 105 miles (165 kilometers) an hour after weakening overnight. Earl was 85 miles east of Cape Hatteras at 5 a.m. Miami time moving north-northeast at 18 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on its website. Winds dropped from 145 mph yesterday, making Earl a Category 2 storm, the second-weakest on the 5-step Saffir-Simpson scale.
